Recommendations for in-person sources of info?
« on: Tuesday 30 October 18 03:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi all
I am researching family links who lived in different parts of Ireland: Tramore and Waterford city, Enniscorthy, Limerick city and Coleraine. I've spent quite a bit of time over the years researching online, through ancestry.com, findmypast.com, familysearch.org, irishgenealogy.ie, proni and groni, nationalarchives.ie and even Dr Google, with some good results and some continuing family history mysteries.
However, there is always more in archives and libraries than you can see online, so next year I'm going to Ireland for the first time to see what else I can find out in person.
Can anyone suggest repositories besides the national archives that would be useful to visit? I'd like to have a plan to make good use of limited time.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Have you tried Resources  on each County board?  Below is the one for Waterford.

Also have a look at this.

Everything depends on who they were, status etc etc..
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Concentrating on Coleraine
Exactly what are you looking for? Many of the resources you might be looking for could already be online or only available in Belfast (PRONI, etc.) so in order to answer your query more details are needed.
Coleraine isn't anywhere near your other places of interest so the first thing to consider is transport. How are you going to get there and back? The best links for public transport tend to fan out from Dublin. In the case of Coleraine this might mean travelling to Belfast and then to Coleraine. If you are renting a car to get about keep in mind that what seem like small distances may take longer than you expect when you are driving through small towns/villages or on local roads.
Once in Coleraine you might be disappointed. The library is undergoing renovations so most of the collection is unavailable (can't remember when it's supposed to re-open). The most valuable items from a research point of view are the church records (copies of PRONI microfilms) and local newspapers (also on microfilm but many available online now) which are available at another location for the duration.
Is it actually Coleraine you have as a location or is it the Coleraine area? 'Coleraine area' covers quite a distance in North Derry/North Antrim.

Thanks, I knew a query like this would reveal useful info.
Aghadowey, I appreciate your comment that useful records might be better found elsewhere. That was what I was trying to establish. Sometimes it's easier to find information in smaller places, and sometimes it's harder.
The son in the family I'm looking for, William Price, had a drapery business in Coleraine and was active with the River Bann Rowing Club. The family lived there for 20 to 30 years, definitely during the 1870s and 1880s, and possibly a bit earlier. All three children married in Coleraine before they moved away or died. I guess what I was hoping to find was a local history book or other records for that period with a bit of information about the businesses in town that might provide some clues about when William started in business, where he came from, or maybe school records to show when they arrived. The younger daughter was born in Ballygawley, Co Tyrone in 1857, but the father was an excise officer, so they may have moved around a bit. He died before the older daughter married in 1873. I'm going to see if there's anything about him in excise records at the National Archives at Kew. With any luck they will reveal a bit about him.
Thanks.

Hallmark, I hadn't realised that google with different country suffixes gave different results. That will keep me busy for a while!
Thanks for the tip.

You'll be able to find lots online. Regarding the various Coleraine addresses- most of the centre has been vandalised by redevelopment but you'll be able to see most of it from Google Streetview.

Coleraine in Modern Times by Dr. Mullin and the Bann Disc (issued annually by Coleraine Historical Society) are most likely local histories.
(Primary) School records most likely to be in PRONI- you can check their e-catalogue. Coleraine Academical Institution (now merged with Coleraine Girls’ High School and called Coleraine Grammar School) had excellent records on past pupils and its pupils have had a long association with rowing on the Bann.
There are also directories that cover the period of interest-
1880- River Bann Rowing Club - Boat-house, Hanover Gardens. Wm. Price, treas. LINK
Other directories covering Coleraine on same site but I can’t see William Price listed under Customs.

Emma Price’s marriage in 1873 (St. Patrick’s Parish Church in the centre of Coleraine) gives her address as New Row-

Still New Row when daughter Harriette Lydia Price married in 1878-

Coleraine Chronicle, 14 Nov.1896: … scrutiny into the voting papers for the election of seven pupils was announced, Among these elected were—William B Stanley Price, son of late Br. William Price, draper, Coleraine, Lodge 754, 2,595 votes William H Winter, son of late Br. William Winter, hotel- …
Note: the 1882 & 1884 addresses might be the same place. The present Lodge Road crosses Lodge Road roundabout to become the road to Ballymoney (Newbridge Road) but I have seen it listed as Ballymoney Road.

Northern Constitution, 21 Nov.1885: KID DRIVING & HAND KNIT GLOVES. WELSH M … SCARFS, … LONDON FELT HATS, … WILLIAM PRICE, HOSIER, GLOVER, AND SHIRTMAKER CHURCH ST., COLERAINE.

The Will of William Price late of Coleraine County Londonderry Silk Mercer who died 12 December 1888 at same place was proved at Londonderry by Henry Anderson Macaulay of Coleraine Solicitor one of the Executors. Will dated 1882 mentions ‘dear wife’ and ‘infant daughter.’
