Ancestry "Matches map"
« on: Tuesday 30 October 18 12:55 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone else have this facility on their DNA page at the top just to the right of the button that reads "Regions"?

I can't find an explanation for it by Googling. What do the numbers on the green pointers signify and there doesn't seem to be anywhere near enough of them compared with my DNA list. I have 270 "4th cousins or closer" and there certainly aren't 270 green pointers on the map of the world to match them.

If it's the one that is for locations of matches rather than those in their trees, it can only show those who give their location.

I think, out of 295 of 4-6, I have 28 in US, 2 in Canada, 8 in Australia, 2 in Europe and 14 in UK.

Roberta Estes has written a blog post about this:

"Ancestry displays city/state where you live on map to your DNA matches"

https://dna-explained.com/?p=21703

Lots of comments at the base of the article.

Actually I find that idea/facility quite helpful. I tend to try and contact my matches in the UK first, simply because generally they have more info/knowledge about their British ancestors then the matches who come from the US or Australia or New Zealand.

To the best of my knowledge from my paper trail my ancestor left these shores rather than arriving on them.

The few connections I've made with my matches overseas have either not known where in Britain our shared ancestors came from or have got the towns or counties completely wrong - understandably, as they have no familiarity with the places.

Except that it will tell you that I live in 'foreign parts', but I I was born in England and so were all my known ancestors. So it can be misleading.
