John Wollers b 1890 Wolverhampton
« on: Tuesday 30 October 18 15:54 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the service record of John Wollers, b 1890 wolverhampton...

I can see his medals card but nothing else, he is also said to have won a "medal of gallantry at the Somme", would this be the British war and victory, or a separate medal?

These are his details

John Wollers

Smith, Tolley, Griffiths,
Monaghan, Richards, Clark, Clarke,
Brazier, Filben, Fibben,Filbin

It looks as if his service record is one of the many thousands lost to bombing in the Second World War.  His medal roll tells us only that he began overseas after the end of 1915 in 1/7th Bn and served also in 27th Bn which became 24/27 Bn later.  There is no mention of any gallantry award in the London Gazette for him under his name or his number(s).  Both 1/7 and 27 Bns fought on the Somme.  The BW and Victory medals were both campaign medals not for gallantry.

Nothing wrong with looking although the chances are slim!

You do have some fixed points which will cut down the reading.  He wasn't in France until 1916 at the earliest so anything before then can be ignored. We don't know when he transferred from 7 Bn to 27 Bn but you could look for a record of transfers of men from one to the other.  He was in 27 Bn when they became 24/27 Bn which was in August 1917.  The diaries are on Ancestry, there are a lot of them.

Just a bit to add to MaxD's information. When in the 1/7th. he had the no. 7/2482. The 1/7th. was a Territorial Batt. & all were renumbered in Jan. 1917 with a 6 digit no. When he transferred to the 27th. he had the no. 290612 so must have been in the 1/7th. at least until Jan. 1917.
The 27th. weren't TF so wasn't given it after transfer.
