Bennett or Kennett?
« on: Tuesday 30 October 18 16:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I'm hoping someone here can the surnames of some people mentioned in this extract from the 1582 Will of Henry Rigden.

Three lines down from the top Henry mentions three children Robert, Isaac [I think it is Isaac but correct me if anyone thinks it's something else] and Johan who he calls "my wiffe's children". I'm not sure if the surname after each of these is Bennett or Kennett, my initial thought was Kennett but I'd appreciate clarification.

Also at the end of the extract Henry mentions his daughter but I'm not sure what her first name is. The name starts with "Mal" and looks "Mal__rd. A few lines later Henry mentions his daughter Mildred but I'm pretty sure the name here starts "Mal" rather than "Mild" or "Myld" however I may be wrong.

If anyone can recognise it or has any ideas, again I'd be grateful for any ideas.

Thanks in advance

Matt

I think I've found the answer to what the surname is. It looks like I was right with Kennett as I have just found a marriage for Henry Rigden to Anne Kennett in Lower Hardres in January 1570.

Kennett and Isaac are correct.

The daughter here is Mildred.  The tail of the M falls across the i, which makes it look like an a.

Compare with the i in Rigdon to sort out what is what.

Thanks for that. I originally wrote it down as Mildred but then changed my mind when I saw her name written further down.

Can I ask for clarification of the names of the witnesses at the end of this will? The first two are William Bing and Edward Owen. The third person's name looks like Rychard something with the surname looking like it ends "ter" but I'm not certain. The name of the last witness is Thomas something - Ginder or Gander I believe.

Thanks for the help and clarification.

I think he's Richarde dancaster Matt.

The surname of Thomas is tricky as the huge loop from the Richard above obscures it, but I think you're right with Ginder - can't see any 'a' in there to make it 'Gander'.

By the way it's written 'William Binge'.

Hi there

I didn't even think of "Dancaster" (or "dancaster") although the first part of the word looked squashed to me so perhaps why I didn't see it.

I think the surname of Thomas is definitely Ginder and not Gander, I've seen the name elsewhere in the Will now and it looks much more like "Gind" instead of "Gand".

Sorry I forgot to put the "e" on Bing lol! I saw it there and wrote it in my notes but not on here.

Thanks for helping clarify these names.

Could "Dancaster" be "Doncaster" or a variation of that perhaps?

Quite possibly. You'd have to vary the spellings in a search.

I agree with dancaster and Ginder.

The other witness is Richarde Slacke.
