RAF Airmen Service Records WW1
« on: Thursday 01 November 18 14:54 GMT (UK) »
Hello
From searching service records I believe I may have found my grandfather in the above records.
Could anyone tell me what the records may state as to the service he completed and whether it would be beneficial to subscribe to the site.
If it is his record he commenced service in July 1916.
Many thanks
Eric

Can you give us his name, please.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Which site is it you are referring to as "service records"?  If you post his name and details one can give you an idea of what is there which will usually be the service dates and units he served with and the ranks he attained at the least.
If he started in 1916 he would have been in the army (perhaps Royal Flying Corps but not necessarily) before transfer to the RAF on 1 April 1918.  Earlier army records for RAF men are sketchy.

Thank you both for your replies.
I know little about my grandfather at this particular time of his life other than he was a printer/poster designer in the Manchester area.
A general search on the two main family history sites namely A------y and F m P I came across a person with the same name of Joseph Burton WILKINSON . His birthday being July 1881.
One of the sites had a birth year of 1882 so I thought this could be a possible lead.
I took a service number of 41266 and date of service of 31.7.1916 so I thought this would have possibly been a conscription.
I know I am on a wing and a prayer with this one (if you pardon the pun).
Thanks for your time
Eric

That man was married ion Jul 6 1909 in Manchester,  His wife lived at 45Prince Street Ardwick.  He was in Railway advertising before joining the RFC on 31 Jul 1916 - yours??

Yes,you have found my grandfather. If you have any further ideas as to my next move to see what his service would have involved then I would be very grateful .
Many thanks

His record is on both Findmypast and Ancestry.  On the latter he is in the additional costs area.  Either or both usually have a free session around the time of Armistice Day if you don't want to take out a sub (findmypast does a pay as you go sub and they have also the RAF Muster roll which is the 1918 record of everyone who became RAF on that date).  His record is pretty thin so I'd suggest you might like to wait a few days and keep looking in on FindMyPast?
