Looking for Henry Hopping from Devonport
« on: Friday 02 November 18 09:53 GMT (UK) »
My great great grandfather was born, according to his obituary,  in about 1828-1831 in Devonport, Plymouth, Devon. (His age seems to have decreased by about 2 or 3 years at the time of his second marriage to a woman 20 years younger!) He first shows up in a record in South Australia in 1854. I cannot find him on any passenger list arriving in Australia, despite extensive searches. There is a Henry Hopping born in Devonport who is recorded on the 1851 UK census as a Shipwright.  This man's parents are John and Elizabeth (Frood).  There is also a record of a Henry Hopping from Devonport being in the Merchant Navy sometime between 1852 and 1854. It is tempting to think that he may have jumped ship in Australia, but there is no actual evidence for that.  (However it was at the time of the gold rush in Victoria!)

I have only circumstantial evidence to tie these two Henrys together. His family in South Australia believe that he arrived here in 1847, which is contradicted by the fact that he appears in the UK census of 1851. There are other men named Henry Hopping in Devon at around about the right time, but none of them fits as well.

If anyone can shed any light on this I would be exceedingly grateful.

Hi Trish!
Thanks for your reply.
Yes that is him! To make matters.more complicated, both his wives were named Catherine McInnes! The first one, known as Kate or Katrine, died in 1881 and he married again in 1882.
However the John Hopping you mention is a mystery. I have not been able to find out much more about him than you have mentioned. He is not the John Hopping from Devon who was the brother of "Henry", as he was in England for the 1851 Census.
Regards, Sue.

Yes I have that info about the second marriage, thank you!  The fact that his father's name is given as John is one of the pieces of evidence that might connect this Henry to the one in Devonport.

Good point about Rosetta. I haven't researched this couple for quite a long time, I probably should give it another go.

There looks to also be another sister, Agnes Susan Hopping born 1827 in St Sidwell, Exeter, Devon.

She married in 1852 in Devon and not long after with husband Francis Baker, they headed off to Victoria and then Sydney to have their children.

That 1852 marriage back in Devon shows her father as John, brickmaker too.

Added: An Agnes Baker was one of the witnesses to the marriage in 1889 of John Hopping and Margaret Nelson Black (likely John's sister from what we have?).

Possible entry for this Agnes with her mother in 1851 in Exeter St Leonard:

Agnes Hopping 65 widowed, proprieter of houses b. Kingsbridge, Devon
Agnes Susan Hopping 24 mercer/draper's shop assistant b. Exeter
Maria Baily 17 sevant

How to connect brother and sister to your Henry...if there is any connection  :-\
