Help deciphering surname
« on: Tuesday 06 November 18 22:03 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I've hit a dead end with my Family History as I just can't make out what the maiden Surname is.  Can anyone help? I can make out the first and last 2 letters, but in between I'm not sure. I've tried various searches on Scotlands People website but nothing seems to match what I think it is.

The first line is Janet Dow
Middle Line is Maiden Surname - shortened to MS
Last Line (deceased)

I've got as far back as 1806 with a marriage certificate and I am hoping if this name is deciphered, I can find a Birth Certificate of an ancestor who lived to 91 years old! He passed away in 1873

Thank You!

It looks like McAndy to me.
There are entries for a Janet McAndy on FamilySearch but without knowing a date or location, they may not be relevant.

Could it be McKinlay?

A wider snip for letter comparison would possibly help along with date & place?

Edit, Deleted as I see you've added to your original post

Thanks everyone. I had always thought McAndy too and I couldn't see anything else, except that. So I'm glad this post confirms it! Thank You!!

I'll have a look for Janet McAndy on Family Search, Thanks. I've searched thoroughly on Scotland's people with no luck unfortunately.

It's great tracing back my ancestry, I love the fact I'm still living in a 30 mile radius as my ancestors 200 years ago! My Dad's parents died before he turned 5 and he lived with foster parents, so he had no clue of his history and it's great to uncover it all!

Hi,
If you contact Scotlands People and ask for a rescan of the certificate it might make it easier to decipher.
There is a link on their web page and normally takes only a couple of days to reply.

It was common in scotland to give maternal surnames as middle names. Have you got all of the following two generations to check for likely names? My family had three generations who took grandmothers surnames as their middle name.
