1893 Viennese BMD register - occupation?
« on: Wednesday 07 November 18 14:47 GMT (UK) »
I've been trying to decipher the occupation of Laura Gardner, born Maidstone. Can anyone help?
There is a thread about the Gardner sisters on the Europe forum.

Thanks

I would expect her occupation to be something like a governess, but thought in German that is gouvernante?

Well it gives her first and last names then  says Maidstone then under that
geborn,which means born.
So the very last word would be what we need to decipher.
I ‘ll have another look.

Any chance of seeing more of the document.

What makes you so sure that the last word is the occupation?

Is it where she was born??

The last word is the only one which can be the occupation.
We have her first and last names,
then Maidstone then under that geboren, which means she was born in Maidstone , then the last word which we can’t make out.
It seems to start with a letter very like the lower case g of geboren.
But the rest ,well it is so hard and not speaking German makes it well nigh impossible for me.
As someone has pointed out how do you know the last word is th e occupation, have you other examples with which to compare?
Best of luck ..
Viktoria.

Sorry, I only have access to my tablet at the moment, so can't edit the image.
The reason for thinking the last word in Laura's details is her occupation is the column header which says "Family name, birthplace and occupation(Stand).

Hopefully I can post a more detailed image later.
