St Mary's Cemetery, Rossmore lookup request
« on: Friday 09 November 18 17:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Trying to track down the headstone of a James Jeremiah O'Donovan, buried in the above cemetery in 1962. He was the parish priest in Kilmeen from 1945 to 1962 (http://corkandross.org/priests/very-rev-james-odonovan-pp/). Various things point to him being the son of my great grandparents, but I can find no records of his existence in census records or other information I have. There is a son, Simon James, who I think may be the same person. Simon is referred to in my grandfather's (his brother's) diary, and in particular there was an entry stating he'd changed his mind about becoming a priest. I'm wondering if he changed his mind again. I'm hoping the headstone mighty make some reference to his parents/family, or help in some other way. Would it make sense for someone christened Simon James to take the name James Jeremiah when becoming a priest? Annoyingly, I was over there myself a couple of months back and could have checked if I'd realised, and it won't be until next year that I'll get another chance

Thanks,
Kevin

James Jeremiah O'Donovan

Where did you get Jeremiah from as he is only referred to as James in the link

Are you able to verify the Kearney connection?

Does the birthplace given match up with what you know of the family?

I don't know where Rossmore is but some people take some photographs when at a Cemetery and put them online as they might help others

There are some for Cork here

Maybe it is here?

Thanks for the reply Carole.

“Jeremiah” comes from a record in the England and Wales National Probate Calendar - the date and place of death are both mentioned and match

Yes, I’m pretty sure of the Kearney connection. The two Kearney priests mentioned on that page are confirmed as brothers of my great grandfather’s wife. The page states that he is their nephew. It’s not impossible they had another sister who also married an O’Donovan, but I’ve no record of that.

The area fits as well. In fact I seem to recall my great grandfather was married in Kilmeen (though I don’t have my records to hand at the moment)

Hi Hallmark. Yes, I’m aware of those resources, and have used them in the past. I’ve not found anything for this cemetery though.

Thanks Dathai. I'd seen the two census records before, but I'd not come across the death return

Hi Sinann,
Thanks for the suggestion, but St Mary's appears to not be on their list. Good site though
