BSAC Medals - Rhodesia 1896
« on: Monday 12 November 18 09:12 GMT (UK) »
How does one ascertain which medal of the variants someone would have been entitled to?
I have two great uncles both on the medal rolls and looking for assistance to confirm which medal they could have received

If it was service in Rhodesia only in 1896 there was only the one clasp "Rhodesia" on the medal.  Other clasps were for other related campaigns in 1890, 93 and 97

Thanks MaxD

One of the brothers served in 1893 & was at Singuesi, and later with the BFF (Giffords Horse) in 1896
Would he have received the undated medal with 'Matebeleland 1893' clasp and the 'Rhodesia 1896' clasp?

The other brother was also in the BFF (Gifford's Horse) in 1896, so presumably the 1896 medal with no clasp?

i've not been able to verify if they were together at Singuesi.

I must confess to being guided by the Anglo-Boer War web site rather than any specialist knowledge of the campaigns but from what that site (and others) say about the medal criteria, it seems as if presence at one or other individual engagements does not limit the award, it was participation in the relevant campaign that counted so I'd go along with your reading of their entitlement.
