Bernard Thistlethwaite’s book ‘The Bax family : an account of the early Quaker Baxes of Capel & Ockley, Surrey with particulars & notes on a number of allied families’
He is Genealogist cousin of mine has Alice Swinburn as daughter of John Swinburn  and Dorothy Swinburn
They were cousins
John was the son of George Swinburn
Dorothy was the daughter of John Swinburn
John and George were brothers, sons of an earlier John Swinburn
Dorothy’s father, John, was married to Catherine Stackhouse
John’s father, George, was married to Alice Unknown
Catherine Stackhouse is related to the famous Theological Scholar Thomas Stackhouse
I have located a Swinburn Famiy History web site which seems to confirm this but But  "THE PEDIGREES OF  THE LANGSTAFFS OF TEESDALE AND WEARDALE" by George Blundell Longstaff says "Alice, da. of John Swinburn of Sunderland, ship-owner, and Dorothy Stackhouse his wife (sister of Thomas Stackhouse the Commentator); m. at Sunderland; d. at Great Ayton 25 iii 1865, aet. 60. 1st Wife. So it would appear that George Blundell Longstaff missed out a generation, linking Alice to the wrong John Swinburn? Can anyone confirm the genealogy I have?
I have found her FT at the following web site: http://www.webring.org/l/rd?ring=ukgen;id=1;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwebspace%2Ewebring%2Ecom%2Fpeople%2Fau%2Fum_7035%2Fstackhouse%2Ehtml

Baptism at Sunderland Holy Trinity (FreeReg) :

Born 22 Jan 1805, baptised 2 June 1805, Alice Swinburn, 2nd daughter of John (Blockmaker) and Dorothy Swinburn, formerly Swinburn.

John Swinburn (of Sunderland parish) married Dorothy Swinburn at Auckland St. Andrew 9 Feb 1803, by License (FreeReg)

License on Familysearch says John was 21, a Yeoman of Sunderland, Dorothy was 21, of S. (Sunderland?) and Auckland. Bondsman was John Swinburn, Yeoman, of Bishop Auckland.

Thank you so much
How about confirmation of the marriage of Dorothy Swinburn’s parents, John Thomas Swinburn b 1730 and Catherine Stackhouse b 1739?

Can't see a marriage, but the Probate Record of John Stackhouse, Apothecary of Bishop Auckland, 2 August 1751, is granted to a William Humble of Boldon and a Ralph Hodgson. Curators and Guardians of Dorothy age 19, Frances age 15, Johannah age 14, and Catherine age 12, minors, daughters of John Stackhouse. Margaret Gully (late Stackhouse) also a daughter renounced her claim.

A later Probate for John Stackhouse, Apothecary and Surgeon of Bishop Auckland, 11 March 1763, is granted to 4 men including Thomas Howgill, Surgeon and Apothecary of Bishop Auckland, husband of Joanna formerly Stackhouse. And John Swinburn, Watchmaker of Sunderland, husband of Catherine, formerly Stackhouse. This will be the daughters taking control of what was left of the estate.

An earlier Will of a John Stackhouse, Rector of Boldon, proved 16 Dec 1734, mentions his wife Mary, his daughters Elizabeth Stackhouse, Ann Chipchase and Johanna wife of William Humble of Boldon, his sister Margaret Hall (widow), and his sons Thomas, John and William.

So it looks like the William Humble who was looking after Catherine and her sisters when John Jnr died, was their uncle.

I wonder if this admin for Dorothy Swinburne, widow of Bishop Auckland, Date of death 5 July 1839 Probate 15 Nov 1839 is relevant

"John Swinburne of Bishop Auckland in the county of  Durham gentleman George Swinburne of the same place  surgeon George Dixon also of the same place schoolmaster William Hepple also of the same place gentleman and Christopher Man also of the same place shoemaker..... the above bounden John Swinburne and George Swinburne and Alice Dixon wife of the above bounden George Dixon the natural and lawful children only next of kin and.....of Dorothy Swinburn".

Although indexed Swinburne all the "e"s in Swinburne have been crossed out in the actual document.

There is also an admin. for John Swinburn date of probate 13 Nov 1809 which names Dorothy as his daughter and wife of John Swinburn of Sunderland blockmaker.

I think the "Langstaffs of Teesdale and Weardale" is a fantastic resource. I have used it a great deal as my gg grandmother was a Longstaff from Byers Green. On her pedigree  not all her siblings are showing and so like anything else as a resource the Langstaffs has to be used critically.

My thanks to you both, Alan and William
Am I correct in interpreting that the records you have both provided seem to confirm that
John Swinburn b 1703 = Mary was the father of
George Swinburn b 1740 = Alice b 1742 and
John Thomas Swinburn b 1330 = Catherine Stackhouse b 1739
John Swinburn b 1765 was son of George and Alice
Dorothy Swinburn b 1772 was daughter of John Thomas
They married and their daughter was Alice Swinburn b 1805 = George Dixon b 1812, my 2nd Gt Grandfather ?
It may be of interest to note that George and Alice had a daughter Isabella = John Hodgson
Also that John Thomas and Catherine also had a daughter Catherine Stackhouse b 1761 and a son Thomas b 1766

I have the parents of Catherine Stackhouse b 1739 as John Stackhouse b 1686 and Dorothy Burrell b 1696

The only parts I really looked at would suggest that Alice Swinburn was the daughter of John Swinburn and Dorothy Swinburn and that George Blundell Longstaff was incorrect (do bear in mind that as well as transcribing parish records etc he did interviews - it may have been one of his interviewees who was muddled!).

The burial for John Swinburn in 1809 in Auckland St Andrews gives his age as 79 and occupation as watchmaker (I presume this links to the admin. I quoted earlier where Dorothy is named as his lawful daughter and next of kin).

The groindex has a death for a John Swinburn Dec q 1838 in Auckland age 72 - I wonder if this is Alice's father?

The death of Alice's mother Dorothy is showing on freebmd but  strangely I am unable to locate her on the groindex to confirm her age at death.

Incidentally I do have a very tenuous connection to the Dixons of Cockfield - a second cousin 4x removed married Jeremiah Dixon,a grandson of George Dixon of Cockfield in 1857. I do not normally investigate such ties further but I found this a really interesting family to look at with the scientific discoveries  and connection to the Mason/ Dixon Line.
