East Suffolk Regiment
« on: Tuesday 20 November 18 22:32 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I wonder please if anyone can help me or advise me where to find more info as i don't know much about the military.

I am trying to find more out about an

Andrew Magee
service no 2133
Recruit
1st Bn 12th East Suffolk Regiment of Foot
HQ location Preston

I think he joined in 1871 , would it have been in Preston where he signed up . There is also a record for Andrew Magee Desertion place Preston 1878.

Would he have stayed in Preston for 7 years or would they have moved round.

Any info would be a great help and appreciated.
many thanks

The 12th Foot had two regular battalions at that time.  In 1871 the 1st Battalion was in England and the 2nd in India.  The record says that he is with the 1st Battalion but attached from the 2nd Battalion.  That implies, as a recruit, that he was being trained by the 1st Battalion but was earmarked to join the 2nd Battalion after training.  If he went to the 2nd, he would have gone to India but returned to England with them in 1877.  If he stayed with the 1st, he would have gone to Ireland in 1872 and they were due to go to India in 1878.  Both scenarios would put him in England when he deserted.

Apart from the deserion notice, I find no other record.

Dose anyone know if the regiment might have been at the Sheffield Hillsborough Barracks between the dates of 01/04/71 and 30/06/1871 or would they have been at Preston

The 1st Battalion was in Preston 1 April 1871 and 1 August 1871 and between.
