« on: Thursday 22 November 18 16:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi all
Helping a friend trying to trace John Wright all they have are the two photo's, and what they would like to know is what regiment he was in and where was he when he posted the postcard. I can make out Pte John Wright 82914,3rd Troop 'D' squad,...………………….Cavalry and then the last line Ireland.
Many Thanks

I think it says Newbridge Barracks , Newbridge , County Kildare , but there is a word after Barracks which looks like Right , which doesn't make sense.

Hi Christine 53
Thanks for the quick reply, I agree with what you say, another pair of eye's has made it quite clear, I agree also with the word Right I didn't put it down because like yourself it didn't make sense.
once again thank you, I will pass on what you say to my friend.

The word after Barracks is Regt, continuing from Cavalry in the line above. The line beneath the troop/squad details is something (maybe 2nd) something Cavalry Regiment.  It is the two words before Cavalry which are the vital ones.  2nd Dragoon Guards???  3rd Hussars?
The service number doesn't throw up anything.

The cavalry regiments whose title a civilian might render as "Cavalry Regiment" were the Reserve Regiments of Cavalry, there were some in Ireland.  There were no regiments with those words exactly in their title.

Do you know the date which might help?

I think it could "3rd Hussars cavalry".   The 3rd Hussars regiment (or at least a detachment thereof) was at Newbridge in the 1915-1918 period.

I am with ShaunJ - the 2nd Reserve Regiment of cavalry was in Aldershot.

After the 1917 re-organisation the 2nd Reserve Cavalry Regiment was at The Curragh.

Switching allegiance, the bit after "d" does indeed look like Reserve. I think tonepad has it.

Question now is which of those regiments trained by that outfit did he go to?
