Born Retford, Notts, son of Charles J. & Emily Merryweather. B.A. (Cantab) modern languages. He spent time in France and Germany to improve his foreign languages. Teacher of modern languages at Manchester Grammar.
Commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in 16th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers November 1914. Promoted captain January 1915.

Killed in action after capturing Munich Trench during attempt to rescue 120 soldiers trapped for several days in Frankfurt Trench behind enemy lines. Commemmorated on Thiepval Memorial.
