William Jarvis 1851 Census address
« on: Saturday 24 November 18 11:11 GMT (UK) »
I would very much appreciate some help with this.
I am trying to find the parents of Mary Hunt, born Jarvis, who I think probably married William Hunt (Leicester Sept 1839 15 171 seems to fit the bill).

Mary Hunt's age is rather inconsistent through the censuses and sometimes she is recorded as born in Leicester, but twice she is from Longton, Staffs. She may have been the daughter of William Jarvis. A Mary Ann Jarvis, daughter of William, was baptised in Longton in 1813 (I.G.I.)

In 1851, when the Hunts are at Hodson’s Court, St Mary’s, Leicester, there is a Jarvis, possibly a sibling of Mary, living almost next door. It seems significant that William Hunt had occupations variously related to pottery and Longton is in the Potteries.

What I am keen to know is where exactly a William Jarvis, also from the Longton area, was living in Leicester St Mary’s in 1851. He is a potter and if he was living very near to the Hunts it would be very suggestive that he could be Mary’s father.

The marriage register has Mary's father as William Jarvis, a Traveller.

William was also a Traveller, as was his father, also William.

All living in Red Cross street, as was William Jarvis in 1841 with wife, Rebecca, and children.

Beaten as well:-

William Jarvis married Rebecca Hodgkin(s) on 30th October 1815 at Eccleshall Holy Trinity, Staffs. The birth of the last child, Richard, shows the mother as Hodgkin.

Rebecca Jarvis, age 49 of Thornton Lane, buried at St Martin's, Leicester, on 18th November 1846.

Many thanks for the replies. William and Rebecca seem to fit the bill. I suppose it is possible that Mary Jarvis was born in Longton but baptised in Leicester. The correspondances seem too close to be coincidental.

Sorry, my post crossed with the last very informative posts. I never cease to be amazed at the help I get on Rootschat. A lot for me to take in here, but it sounds very promising. I know that Red Cross Street disappeared years ago but it ran between St Martin’s parish and St Mary de Castro parish.

Many thanks,

Dave
