Ship Merope 9th June 1871
« on: Sunday 25 November 18 04:27 GMT (UK) »
The Ship "Merope" sailed from Gravesend about 3pm on the 9th June 1871 bound for New Zealand.
Patrick FAHEY (occupation: Shepherd) with his Wife, Bridget and baby Daughter Mary immigrating, the Ship arrived Christchurch, New Zealand  August 1871.
Hoping sks may have access to British newspapers of the day and by chance some news therein about this family and their origins, from Galway, Ireland.  Difficult to search British newspapers from the southern hemisphere.
Kind regards

Actually it is very easy to research British newspapers from down here.

https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk.  This site allows you three free looks, before you have to pay money

Or they are also on findmypast.co.uk

However, all I can see are shipping movements for the Merope.

What are you hoping to find?

I'm not sure why a British Newspaper (from London or Gravesend) would carry a news article regarding an Irish emigrant family?

Is there a chance they were enumerated on the 1871 census?

Searching newspapers is no easier from the British Isles ;D
We still have to go online ::)
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

How old was "baby daughter Mary" at time of emigrating?

Have you checked Irish Genealogy for a possible civil birth -

I couldn't find a Civil record for Mary Fah(e)y , but there is a possible baptism :

From the Catholic Parish Registers for Castlegar, Galway :

Mary Fahy , daughter of Patrick Fahy and Bridget Joyce of Carrabrown , 16 Jan 1870
( date may be 1869 as the entries in the Register are out of sequence )
I think Carrabrown may be Carrowbrowne.

Edit :

I see this baptism has already been given on your other thread to which you have not returned.

Hullo,
Thank you for your reply.  The shipping passenger list stated baby Mary age as 1.
Patrick was 29 and Bridget 27.
Kind regards
