Bishopwearmouth - where would someone be buried?
« on: Tuesday 04 December 18 16:20 GMT (UK) »
I have a record of someone buried in October 1855 in Bishopwearmouth. However I've heard that St Michael's closed off their graveyard in the 1840s due to overcrowding, so where would this person actually have been buried? I know Bishopwearmouth Cemetery didn't open 'til the following year.

Bishopwearmouth Cemetery Thornton Place/Gill Bridge/Rector’s Gill (aka Galley's Gill Cemetery) was Opened in October 1839 to relieve pressure on St Michael's. It closed after the Bishopwearmouth Cemetery in Chester Road opened in July 1856.
St Michael's graveyard, all funerals were excluded on 15th October 1849 due to excessive overcrowding, but those in the 53 vaults were allowed to continue.

When the Galley's Gill cemetery was landscaped in 1972, the graves were covered over, some tombstones were stood up against the perimeter wall, and can still be seen, however the writing is almost illegible.

Is there any way to tell which of these alternatives it would have been?

As all funerals in St Michael's graveyard were excluded on 15th October 1849, and Bishopwearmouth Municipal Cemetery did not open until July 1856, then it seems obvious that someone buried in October 1855 would be in  Galley's Gill Cemetery.

Ah, I think I misread your post. I'd thought Thornton Place, Gill Bridge, Rector’s Gill and Galley's Gill were four different places, not all the same place. Sorry about that. And thanks for the info. :)

Sorry, I should have made it clear that Thornton Place/Gill Bridge/Rector’s Gill (aka Galley's Gill Cemetery) was the same place, referred to sometimes by the different names.
