Two baptisms in two months?
« on: Wednesday 05 December 18 20:57 GMT (UK) »
I can't find a birth certificate/index for my gg grandfather (John Henry Potter) so I have been looking for baptism records.
I know that his father was definitely called Robert Potter and he was a mariner by profession.
I am pretty certain his mother was called Catherine Heffernan too.
I have found two baptisms detailing the following:

1.
Birth: 10/12/1872
Baptism: 11/03/1873
Place: St Francis Xavier, Liverpool
Father: Robert Potter
Mother: Catherine Heffernan

2.
Birth: 12/12/1872
Baptism: 24/02/1873
Place: St Peter's Church, Liverpool
Father: Robert Potter (Mariner)
Mother: Catherine

Both churches were catholic and both records have sufficient evidence in each to be the correct one. They're both so similar yet differen churches and dates (slightly different birth dates).
I was wondering whether anyone had any suggestions which one could be the one I'm looking for?
Thanks

ps. the first record was in latin (not sure if that makes any differnce)

GRO Reference: 1873  M Quarter in WEST DERBY AND TOXTETH PARK  Volume 08B  Page 325

John Henry Potter

The birth reg and both baptisms only refer to him as John.

Both churches were catholic

St Francis Xavier - yes but I think the St Peters referred to on Family Search was the one in Church St Liverpool and that was C of E

In 1881, John was living at 10 Heyworth Street, Everton, Liverpool with his parents and his maternal auntie's family.
In 1891, John was living at 29 Jefferson Street, Everton, Liverpool with his parents and his grandfather.

Thanks

Why are you looking at 1872/1873 baptisms when the 1881 entry shows he was 4yrs old so born 1876/77.  The 1881 also shows him just as John so where and when does Henry appear as his second name?

The 1881 shows him as a boatman which is different to a mariner

All the records I have found only say John (I think i got Henry from my grandma). I assumed the 1881 census to be correct as the family they are living with are his aunty Maragret (with surname Barry) and his parents names are correct. I just assumed the aged 4 to be a mistake in some way.

Also the death record I found says he was born around 1872/1872 and all the other census I have found (up to 1939) say he was born around this time too.

Thanks

I still can't find him in 1891 even using Family Search.  How old was he in 1891?

Who did he marry and when?

Can you please supply the Reference for the 1891 entry - it starts RG12 - then Piece number ... folio ... page

Did he marry Mary Ann Doran 30.1.1897?  Is that where you got his fathers name and occ?  Marriage cert is online and Robert was a mariner.  John is 24

In 1901 Robert & Catherine are in China St and Roberts occ is barge waterman
