Samuel SCOTT otherwise COLES

Samuel "Scott otherwise Coles" was married in Dulverton in 1747 and died in Dulverton in 1753. (I cannot find a baptismal record).

Can anybody explain his surname?

Seems he was either known as Samuel Scott or as Samuel Coles?
Could be stepfather's name?

Or it could be what is usually known as an alias?
