Bridewell Alley, Norwich look uo please??
« on: Friday 07 December 18 17:57 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone help me please, I am trying to find out about present day number 6 Bridewell Alley Norwich. I would like to find out who lived there going back in time and what was the building? I wonder if there’s anyone who could look at the census’s for me to see who was there? The building has just been stripped back and it has revealed some very interesting shields and carvings amongst other things? It is directly opposite what was the prison. The church of St Andrews is at the bottom of the Bridewell Alley.
Any help would be very much appreciated. Best Wishes Jackie

Thank you for your help and advise. I have traced that it was a medical botanists in 1925 owned by William Henry Claxton and then appears to have been passed to his son Edwin Leonard Claxton who is a medical botanist in 1927 and 1933 and then a Chiropodist in 1941.
I will have to try and find the earlier census’s to trace it back further. Bridewell Alley was also once known as St Andrews Lane.
Thanks again, your help is very much appreciated,  Jackie

Don't know if this will help but William Henry Claxton born 1844, Norwich was a Chiropodist and shop keeper in 1911. he was a widower. His son Edwin Leonard was 43.
He married Sarah Campling, 20 April 1865, Norwich. Sarah dies in 1878 and was buried at St George Tombland, Norwich 1 August 1878.
William then married Lucy Sophia Elmer, 24 Dec 1879, Norwich.
William Ernest Claxton and Edwin Leonard Claxton were the children of William and Sarah
William's father was James Claxton who was a Weaver in 1871.
