FORD in Folkington
« on: Saturday 08 December 18 23:04 GMT (UK) »
I researched my FORD ancestors some decades ago but haven't had any luck since with the generations before the 1830s move to Canada.

As far as I could see, the Fords lived for generations in or near the village of Folkington in East Sussex. I was able to find an Edward Ford b. circa 1720 married to Mary. My source notes say: Folkington baptismal register @ Lewes PRO.

I have the son of the above Edward & Mary, Edward Ford marrying Ann Hilton 27 Dec 1770; source: Wilmington marriage register.

I have Edward & Ann's son, John Ford (bapt. 04 Oct 1778) marrying Mary.

I then have John & Mary's son, William marrying Mary Ann Smith of Sevenoaks, Kent.

William & Mary emigrated to Upper Canada in 1837. Their descendants  in North America today number over one thousand.

Frequently I find the name spelled 'Foord' and almost always 'other' FORD families in the area (almost up there with Smith & Jones).

It would be nice to have maiden names for the Marys and perhaps even some sibling names - the pioneer Canadian families certainly recycled William & Mary, Edward & Ann amongst others with their large families.

Is anyone researching FORD in East Sussex?

Brian

Does the death certificate of William Ford or his wife Mary give the names of their parents?

Was there an obituary in the local paper for William and or Mary Ford?.

amondg - I have both death certificates, but parental names (and other things) are reported as "Not Recorded".

The obituaries are equally unrewarding as far as any information that predates their 1839 marriage in Haldeman County, Upper Canada (now Ontario).

ciderdrinker - Mary Pankhurst it is! William & Mary's first recorded birth is for a girl, Mary Pankhurst Ford, born near Tilbury, Canada West 27 May 1842 (occasionally wondered where that 'Pankhurst' came from). Also William, Edward & Ann(e) as John's elder siblings are a good fit for naming patterns seen into the 20th century.

I have contradicting data on John & Mary's firstborn, Mary (1802). I'll have to dig a bit deeper.

Thank you both,

Brian

What we have on Folkington's FORDs as of January 2019.

From the Folkington baptismal registry, found at the Lewes Gov't Office:

Edward Ford (b circa 1720) married to Mary (b circa 1720)
have son Edward Ford (b circa 1745)

son Edward marries Ann Hilton 27 Dec 1770 (per Wilmington, Sussex marriage registry)
children - Anne (bapt 31 May 1771), William (bapt 11 Jul 1773), Edward (bapt 24 Jul 1777) & John (bapt 04 Oct 1778)

John Ford marries Mary Pankhurst 01 Aug 1801 Hellingly, Sussex
children - Mary 21 Nov 1801 - 03 Jun 1821, Philly 1804, Frances 1806, John 1808, James 1810, Peter Edward 1813, William 29 Jun 1815 - 24 Feb 1906, Jesse bapt 22 Nov 1818, Ann bapt 09 Feb 1823, Lucy bapt 03 Feb 1828

My great-great grandfather William Ford emigrated to Canada in 1837. The Canadian branch of the family is well documented throughout.

Thanks again for assists rendered. :)
