Duke and Tate in Montrose
« on: Tuesday 11 December 18 18:15 GMT (UK) »
Help needed!
John DUKE married Elizabeth TATE (TAIT) 16th Jan 1785 in Montrose. They had 6 children all born and baptised in Montrose. John and Elizabeth possibly born 1760ish. But I cannot find births or deaths for either of them.
In a mini bio of son James, John is described as a merchant of Montrose and Elizabeth as the daughter of Thomas TAIT esquire of Montrose.

Mary 1785
a large gap here
James 1792 he became Sir James, lots to be found about him
Betty 1796
Anne 1798 (the ancestor)
David 1800

I was just looking at the newspapers on find my past and found the death of Elizabeth the mother in 1849 age 94 in Montrose

They really should have had a son John, perhaps in that large gap.
I will investigate.

added

I downloaded that document sometime ago and disregarded it.
However further research and another look at it and yes it relevant.
John was a surgeon in the navy and the brother of Sir James Duke.
John died intestate and this is an inventory.

So we can add another child to the family of John and Elizabeth

Mary 1st born may be a clue to Elizabeths' mother being named Mary if traditional naming was used?

Equally, there should have been a Thomas from;

"Elizabeth as the daughter of Thomas TAIT esquire of Montrose"

Possible marriage although it won't have parents but witnesses may help?

DUKE THOMAS
MARY BURLIE
08/01/1830
269/20 84
Aberlemno

Apologies Rosinish, I somehow missed your last suggestion.

I will take a look at this marriage when I am at the family history centre this week.
