Garlands Asylum - Bertram M Steele
« on: Sunday 23 December 18 20:11 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone and hope you all are looking forward to Christmas.

Having died in 1971, a distant cousin of mine Bertram Mitford Steele, whom was kept in Garlands Asylum for most of his life, I won't be able to look at his patient records as I have to wait 100 years for it to be opened.

He was born in Brampton 1886 and died in 1971.

However would he have had admission records? According to a book I have, he was committed in his youth, his teenager years.

I would love to know more about him. He was not in the asylum in 1911 and I cannot find him in 1939.

my thanks

Hi,

Such an unusual name, I think I have found him in 1908 in the Crichton Instution in Dumfries Scotland in 1908,

Hi,

I know that some asylum and hospital records included photographs of the patients. Have you contacted the Wellcome Library to see if they can help?

https://wellcomelibrary.org/using-the-library/services-and-facilities/contact-us/

I think the Dumfries and Galloway Council Archives Catalogue also holds records of the Crichton Royal Institution, you could contact them as well,

It looks as if he was a paid patient at the Crichton. Possibly after the National Health Service came in, or his mother died, he would be transferred to the Garlands. Some case files in the Garlands series have photos attached but these are pre 1918. I don't know if they continued the photographing in later years.
