William PETTIE (PATTIE) Coldstream Northumberland (b.1771) Ancestry?
« on: Monday 24 December 18 02:19 GMT (UK) »
Seeking please any information relating to the ancestry on my PATTIE (or PETTIE) line? My earliest known ancestor was a William PATTIE who married an Elizabeth COLLINS at the Dissenters Church, Ford, Northumberland in 1789. I believe I have found him as a William PETTIE born on 8/9/1771 & baptised on 28/9/1771 at Coldstream, Berwickshire, Scotland (at that time).. The father was given as a 'Shon PETTIE'. Perhaps this was a corruption of 'John'? I am not however certain of this!
Can someone assist me in how to proceed further with this line? I cannot yet determine a likely John PATTIE/PETTIE in the records..Thanking you. cheers Rob - Australia

The dissenters births listed in Ford PRs are usually baptisms from the Presbyterian church in the nearby village of Etal.

As for 'Shon' - I'm thinking Sean.

There were only two baptisms on SP for that name in Berwickshire during that period, they are about about 5 miles apart.
I note the name Pettie and variations is quite strong in Fife but there are others elsewhere.

I've just looked again at the date of the marriage you mention.  They can't have married at a dissenters church in 1789.  The marriage would have to have been in Ford Parish church itself.

Christine is quite right, it was a Parish church marriage.

Hi Rob, you might remember me as we corresponded about 15 years ago on your Patties and Hornes.

It's tempting to think that the William Pettie/Pattie born and baptised at Coldstream in 1771 could be our ancestor but, as you probably know, 'our' William Pattie, i.e. the one who married Elizabeth Collins in 1789 was 75 when he died at Lowick in 1838 according to his death certificate and burial record ... giving a likely birth date somewhere closer to 1762/3.

Regards,
Jon

Thanks to all contributors...so it looks like the earlier ancestry may be around the Fife area in Scotland. I also surmise the scant records during this era make it a difficult exercise to go much further? Can anyone suggest a way to proceed further with my Pattie/Pettie line? Thanks Rob

Hi Rob
Re the comment made by Jon about Williams birth being somewhere closer to 1762/3,
based on his death record.
I decided to have another look on SP 1759 – 1773 when William was between 16 & 30 years old, William in Coldstream was the only one not recorded in Fife, so it might be worth considering the ones below.

PEATIE   WILLIAM   WILLIAM PEATIE/ELSPET BLACK   13/12/1761   Kingsbarns
PEATIE   WILLIAM   JOHN PEATIE AGNES ADAMSON    07/06/1772 St Andrews and St Leonards
PEATIE   WILLIAM   THOMAS PEATIE/ISABLE MORICE 20/07/1771   Cameron
PEATIE   WILLIAM   ROBERT PEATIE/JEAN BROWN    12/04/1767   Anstruther Easter
PEATIE   WILLIAM   WILLIAM PEATIE/CATHRINE RAMSAY    17/04/1763   Cameron
PEATIE   WILLIAM   JOHN PEATIE/EASTER EASTER LAMB   01/02/1766   Largo

I cannot find any records in GB for the children of William & Elizabeth Collins, it would help if you know of any, it might help to consider Williams parents.
