1939 Register Codes and changes in surname
« on: Thursday 27 December 18 09:53 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I'm looking at the 1939 register entry for a "person of interest"!

He has his surname crossed out, and then in red ink is a new surname.
He was 40+ at the time of the register, and a male, so there isn't a new married name, and I'm sure he wouldnt have been adopted either.

Associated with the red ink is a date 8.6.43 and the code "BQA IC".

Any ideas as to what this actually means?

Many thanks

Neil

BQA is the area code for Southgate, Middlesex. Is there any other annotation?

I find that this piece is very useful for understanding the Register:

Many thanks for the link - very useful, though sadly doesn't solve my mystery.

And sadly no other annotations other than BQA and IC.
Given the date and the potential that the code is Middlesex possibly this was a call up reference.
Though the name change for a male is odd, especially as his wife and daughter's name wasn't changed. :-\

Ah - maybe it was how he might have been registered on enlistment as both surnames are usually pronounced in the same way.

Hi

His wife died June 1941 and his daughter married Sep 1941
then maybe he just wanted to move upmarket with his name in 1943?

He was born Samuel Douglas Chumley?

Aha - that's him!

Looks like register didn't mark his birth year correctly.
Still cant find what happened to him after the war..... and the name change still very strange!
