Emma Barker ... Help...

Hi all

One of my lovely ancestors is driving me bonkers and was wondering if any of you lovely people might have better luck...

Emma Jones (nee Barker) born 1851 in Dudley was my g g grandmother.

She married James Jones in Sedgley in 1874 and I've got the family up until 1881 when it all goes quiet... I'm assuming her husband, James, died sometime after the 1881 census as on the 1891 census her two children (including my G grandmother Margaret, were living with family in Wales, but Emma and James are nowhere to be seen as far as i'm aware... given that Emma was still only 40ish if/when her hubby died i wonder if she re-married but so far i have found no trace of an Emma Jones, or Barker after 1881... or her husband...

any help would be awesome!

James doesn't seem to be on the 1881 census entry with the family -

What was James occupation on the marriage cert?  Was he a mariner?

Where were Martha and James Milson Henry in 1891?

Hi Bumble,

Many thanks for that - i actually already have that census. I think that James is on there - but I wonder if there has been a transcription error as the head of the house is listed as Henry Fellows (lodger), 32, Railway Platelayer born in Breaden Heath (Henry Fellows is also the name of the head of the house next door). James i believe from other sources, was born in breaden heath - his brother went on to be a platelayer so i guess it's not a stretch to imagine that it was a family trade.

Hi Carol - on the marriage cert James is down as a Foreman, as was his father John.
Martha i believe went on to marry a Mr Ahhplant. James Milson married a Fanny Weller and ended up in Wales, however i can't find him in 1891 either!

It's after 1881 that i struggleto trace either James or Emma.

The Weller/Jones marriage wasn't until 1905 in Haverfordwest.  In 1901 James jnr is a boarder in Pembrokeshire

Hi Carole, thanks for that. It seems James stayed there all his life and died there in the 50's.

Its his parent who appear to disappear into a puff of smoke after 1881, very odd

It's after 1881 that i struggleto trace either James or Emma.

Which is why I posted 1901 details for James.  He is still not found in 1891

Martha was still a servant in Wolverhampton in 1901 and married Thomas Ashplant in Wolverhampton in 1905

Did you check this entry on freebmd as there was another Emma Jones in Tipton in 1881 same age as your Emma

Oooh no i hadn't spotted that death thank you. That would go some way to explain why the children were elsewhere in 1891.

By the time their youngest daughter gets married in 1909 i know James snr is deceased, so the assumption that he died not long before or after his wife would also explain the children being alone in 1891.

Have you got son James in 1891?

This looks like him transcribed as Thomas M N Jones on one site but reads as James M H

He is 12 yrs old b Tipton and nephew in the household of Edward and Eliza Jones. He is a Shop Assistant.
