Elswick Cemetery Burial Look up
« on: Wednesday 02 January 19 12:27 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone please look up the burial details for Sarah Ann Aitchison (Munden), died 9th January 1906 in 141 Morrison Street, Gateshead. Internment Elswick Cemetery 11th January 1906?

Sarah's Obit: Aitchison.- Gateshead. 141 Morrison Street, died January 8th. Sarah Ann, widow of late William Aitchison, cabman, aged 55 years. Interment Elswick Cemetery. Thursday, January 11th, 2.30 from 101. Dilston Road (Methodist Church), Newcastle. All friends welcome.

Also, I'm searching for Sarah Ann's husband, William Aitchison, who passed away in 1902. I assume he may be buried at Elswick too.

Many thanks!

As you know her date of death and burial date you could contact Elswick for the grave/plot number etc and also ask who else is in the same grave and whether there is a headstone.

Presume you got your info from this link

If you don't mind waiting up to a few weeks until my work  hours fit with library opening hours  (or if no one beats me to it) - I will do the look ups for both Elswick burials on microfilm at Newcastle City library in the local history department.

Thank you both. I don't live in England and I sent an email to enquire about this, but they never got back to me regarding William Aitchinson. It was me who created her page on Find a Grave. I got her records from Ancestry and from old newspapers, but no mention where Williams passed away exactly or where he's buried. Since I don't know the exactly date for him, just 1902, it's impossible to search manually on the British Newspapers Archive. I'll try ringing and if anyone could take a photograph (I presume there's a headstone), would be great. Thank you!

I don't know the exactly date for him, just 1902,

A search on freeBMD https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl shows his death registered in the 2nd (April/May/June) quarter of 1902, which cuts the search window down a little.

Newcastle Evening Chronicle death notices 1885 - 1906 are indexed here  https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/NBL/DeathNotices but there is no William Aitchison listed.

Don't worry that the burial services have not got in touch - I do intend to do these look ups on the Elswick burial records for you soon at my first opportunity.

It might be that William might have a death notice but that he may have been accidentally missed off the death notices website.  I have come across this once before.  That website is an amazing piece of work and such an undertaking I am not surprised if an occasional name might have been accidentally omitted.  If I can find William at Elswick it will be quite easy to check to see if he does actually have a notice or not.

Will be back in touch soon with what I can find. :)

Found Sarah :)!

Elswick Burial Entry:
Entry 39128
Sarah Ann Aitchison
55 years
101 Dilston Road
Buried Jan 11th 1906
Section P  Grave No 437
5/-
Removed from St Augustine's Parish

Evening Chronicle death notice - Tuesday, January 9, 1906:

'AITCHISON.- Gateshead, 141 Morrison Street, died January 8th, Sarah Ann, widow of late William Aitchison, cabman, aged 55 years.  Interment Elswick Cemetery Thursday, January 11th; lift 2.30 from 101, Dilston Road, Newcastle.  All friends invited.'

(Note: Death notice clearly records death as having taken place on th 8th not the 9th as given on post 1.)

I also looked for William but unfortunately could not find him buried at Elswick. I wonder if he might be buried somewhere in Gateshead, perhaps?

Above link should show a map.  Click on thumbnail to enlarge Elswick map.  I suspect by cost Sarah may not have had a purchased grave and so may not have a grave stone.

Now you have the grave reference the burial services might be able to let you know if she does have a gravestone - without charging you for the service of a look up. :)

Durham Records Online have Gateshead East Cemetery records 1863 - 1919 and he's not there.

Saltwell didn't open until 1905 so not there  :-\

This is a mystery!  I could double-check the next time I can get to the library but I don't think I have missed him at Elswick.  ???
