NEELY - DONOVAN Thurles/Holycross, Tipperary
« on: Sunday 06 January 19 17:51 GMT (UK) »
I'm still working on this NEELY family group from Tipperary.  I'm eliminating the unknowns, one by one.

This time I am looking for info on a JAMES NEELY, bapt. 12 Dec 1845 at Holycross.   Last seen in 1870 when he serves as informant on his father's death record, in nearby Cormackstown.

Most of his siblings (6) went to the Greater NYC area (1863-1880) and remained there.   Michael, the youngest went to Dublin and stayed there.  Margaret married Michael Fogarty and remained in the area.

So, I am looking for info on James.

Here is his Tipperary birth family:
Parents:  Richard Neely and Johana Donovan, both born about 1810-1820, somewhere.  Both died in Cormackstown, 1870-1888.

Children, all baptized at Holycross and those are the dates listed:
Mary, Sep 1839
John, Nov 1841
Margaret, Sep 1843
James, Dec 1845
Thomas, Apr 1848
William, Aug 1850
Elizabeth, Mar 1854
Patrick, Mar 1856
Richard, May 1852
Michael, Dec 1859

So, what happened to JAMES NEELY ?
Haven't found him so far, any where.

Thanks.

James was still in Tipperary on Feb 5 1872 as he was a sponsor to Margaret's son Richard FOGARTY LINK
See top of page on the right

You could investigate this death of James NEILY in 1925 LINK
He was a lay brother in Mount St Joseph's Abbey, Roscrea
They are a Cisterian order of monks LINK
However he could have been from anywhere but the age is about right

UPDATE:   just this past Spring, I communicated with the monks at Roscrea, and the James NEILY in their roster was indeed our James NEELY from Thurles/Holycross.    They sent me a lot of info about him.   Like his father, he was a carpenter and he helped to build the site at Roscrea.
