Looking for Great X3 Grandmothers surname
« on: Tuesday 08 January 19 16:54 GMT (UK) »
I would be very grateful for any suggestions as to how I can find out my Great X3 Grandmothers surname. Here is what I have so far:-
Marriage of Ellen Paton to Patrick Morris 1871 Longton Staffordshire. her father was Martin Paton
1st  Child Bridget Morris born    1875 Longton   Mothers maiden name Payden
2nd Child Mary Ann Morris born 1877 Wakefield      "          "          "    Paten
3rd  Child Ellen Morris        born 1880 Pontefract     "          "           "   Payton
4th  Child Margaret Morris   born 1883 Longton        "          "          "   Paton
The first Census I found her on was 1871 living in Longton after she had married, I can't find her before.

Yes they were both born in Ireland, on Ellen's death certificate it states death 1883 Longton age 33 years, so birth would be about 1850.

Have you looked on Family Search for a baptism - Irish records are a bit sparse for that period

Thanks for your suggestion Carol, Yes I have looked under all of the different ways of spelling Ellen's surname as well. It doesn't help that I don't know what part of Ireland either, Patrick I believe was from County Down but they could have met in England & I had hoped to find their families in the 1861 Census, but no luck with that either.

I can’t find anything in 1851 or 1861 either.  The reply I removed asked whether she was still alive in 1911 as birth county would probably have been shown but given the problem with Irish records it still may not have helped.

My money is on Paton :)

You could try posting on the Irish board as there are a lot of members with knowledge of finding Irish records
