Scottish research, some questions
« on: Wednesday 16 January 19 19:23 GMT (UK) »
I have just embarked on a whole new project, charting my future son-in-law's Scottish ancestry. I have done a little Scottish research before, in the 1850-1870 period. However, in this case I will need to access more recent records.
I have his grandmother, a lady born in 1935 and still living, I have also located her marriage and would like to know her parentage. Is there any way to discover this without ordering full certificates? Any useful site which provides clues such as freeBMD or GRO for English/Welsh folk?
I would ask but this is going to be a surprise for his birthday & am not in contact with his parents

Hi unfortunately the only way is to buy the cert although if the grandmother has any siblings who have died the index will give mothers maiden name from 1974 onwards you can then search for possible marriages

Thank you Wendy. This is what I suspected but I will try your suggestion as an interesting exercise. Skoosh, I joined SP a while ago, very useful but costs can quickly mount up!

Huh? Does your daughter not have a relationship with his parents (even a phone relationship), can they just tell her? Would make it far easier!
