Grandfather Percival, Northumberland, 1880s? Help date please
« on: Thursday 17 January 19 12:11 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I believe this photo is of my 3x Great Grandfather who died 1888 aged 75 years.

Can anybody help narrow down the date based on dress etc to see if this could be correct? The alternative is his son (same name, died 1939 aged 84 years) but I have many photos of him which don't bare any resemblance to this gentleman as far as I can see.

Many thanks

Caroline

H Caroline...1939 would be more likely and it could even be later than that...the photographic process would be completely different in 1888.

I agree too, his suit material looks more "modern"

Got a photo of a man in one of those very high buttoning waistcoats, and similar lapels on his jacket -  dated at first half of 1920s.

Thanks everyone for your input, I guess it's not T Percival Snr. Maybe his son changed his appearance in later life or maybe it's been mislabelled. Would anybody like to take a guess at the gentleman's age (tough I know)?

Thanks

Caroline

Tough call but mid 60's to mid 70's maybe.  The white hair and beard can be misleading to make you think older than he really was, I think anyway.

If you have a picture of his son, when he was older preferably, maybe you could post it so we can have a compare  :)

Thanks for the suggestion :) Here are some photos of his son in later life, unfortunately I don't have the originals with me at the moment so can't scan to a better resolution.

FYI T Percival Jnr was described as having violet eyes, the eyes in the first photo look darker to me.
