Going slowly mad re the Langton family
« on: Tuesday 22 January 19 20:09 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find some trace of my elusive 4gt grandfather, Joseph Langton, a FWK.

He MAY be in the 1841 census age 50, (so yob 1791), born in county, with a 30 yr old wife, and various children (which would span his two marriages - altho8ugh there's a son in there that I can't account for).

If he was still alive in 1841, then he's possibly the Joseph Langton who died in 1857 age 70 (yob 1787) and is buried in Welford Rd. This Joseph shares a burial plot with Jane Nutt b 1785 and John Langton b 1788, and some other people who don't appear to be connected. Another possible family member would be Samuel Langton who was a witness at the 2nd marriage of Joseph in 1831.

(Jane Langton m John Nutt in 1813 in St Margaret - hence the link).

According to the censuses, Jane was born in Wigston. There's a John b Wigston in the censuses too, and a Samuel. But my Joseph -- well, I can't find him in the 1851, and whilst there was a Langton family baptising children in Wigston in the right time frame, the only Joseph was bapt 1776,and he was buried in 1787. And the only Jane Langton bapt in Wigston had different parents from Joseph, John and Samuel.

What do people think?? Any ideas?

Hi Annie65115

You Joseph LANGTON, FWK - the details of him you know for sure:
Who were his 2 wives, when & where married?
The names, places and dates of the children of both marriages ?

The 1841 you think might be your Joseph:
HO107 - Piece 604 / Book: 9 /  Folio: 13 / Pg 19
Providence Place, St Margaret Leicester
Jos'h LANGTON 50, Stocking M
Eliz'h LANGTON 30?  (her recorded age is pretty questionable, not clearly a 3)
Eliz'h LANGTON 15, Stocking M
Edw'd LANGTON 15, Bobbin Turn'r
Mary LANGTON 4
Jos'h LANGTON 9 months
Eliz. COOPER 70, Ind.
All born Leicestershire

Which is the son in 1841 that you can't account for?

MARRIAGE 1831:
Joseph LANGTON and Elizabeth PETERS
Married 12 Sep 1831, St Nicholas, Leicester after Banns
Both signed their names by X Mark
Witness:  William PETERS (X Mark) and Saml LANGTON

GRO BIRTHS:
Joseph LANGTON, registered Dec Qtr 1839, Leicester. Mms PETERS
Henry LANGTON,  registered Sep Qtr 1842, Leicester. Mms PETERS
Cornelius LANGTON.  registered Jun Qtr 1845, Leicester. Mms PETERS

GRO DEATH:
Cornelius LANGTON age 1, registered Mar Qtr 1847, Leicester
Burial: St Mary de Castro, Leicester on 3 Feb 1847, Cornelius Langton of Metcalf Street.

The same family in CENSUS 1851 - Joseph father and Joseph son, have been written down as incorrectly as Thos (for Thomas) - very likely the enumerator's error when copying from the schedule to the book:
Wheat Street, St Margaret, Leicester
HO107 / Piece 2088 / Folio 513/ Pg 21
Head: Thos LANGTON 68, Frame Work Knitter, b Wigston
Wife: Elizabeth LANGTON 48, Seamstress, b All Saints, Leic.
Son: Thos LANGTON 11, b St Margarets
Dau: Maria LANGTON 14,  Seamstress, b St Margarets
Son: Henry LANGTON 8, Winder, b St Margarets
Note: the children are 'out of order',

And the same family in CENSUS 1861:
55 Braunstone Gr, St Mary Leicester
RG 9 - Piece 2295/  Folio 79 / Pg 6
Head: Elizabeth LANGTON 58, widow, Lock Stitcher, b
Son: Joseph LANGTON 21, unm, Wool Sorter, b Leicester
Son: Henry LANGTON 18, unm, Weaver, b Leciester

Cheers

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Many thanks, Ambly.

Sorry if the threads appeared too similar! I meant one to have a focus on where Joseph may have been born, and the other a focus on his life from the 1840s onwards, and since there was quite a bit of info, I decided to seperate them. Perhaps they're not as well separated as they seemed when i was tired last night. Mea culpa.
