« on: Wednesday 23 January 19 12:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi to all,
Information or explanation please. On freebmd site I have same named person / place / Vol / month of death entered twice for the same Qtr. Only the page number is different. Are they for the same person? Why the double entry ?
MARIA WENTZELL Chelsea Mar Qtr 1855 Vol 1a Page 107
MARIA WENTZELL Chelsea Mar Qtr 1855 Vol 1a Page 109
Many thanks, JUST J.

The GRO index only has the lower one (aged 39).

If you look at the original version (press the spectacles) you will see that the 109 looks a bit like 107 so I imagine there have been two different transcriptions of the same entry.

If you click the spectacles alongside the entries they will take you to the GRO index page.  There is only one entry for Maria on that page and the reference number is not clear which is probably why it is showing with 2 alternatives

I have come across something similar on Freebmd -

Deaths Dec 1874

William Stones  39  Leeds   9b/327
William Stones  39  Hunslet 9b/242

GRO only has the Leeds entry.  I feel reasonably certain that they must be one and the same death, but why is the Hunslet entry not recorded on GRO?
I have found a burial in this quarter in Hunslet, and have eliminated this William from my search, but was curious!!

If you look at the GRO register listing available to view on freebmd both entries are shown.

Maybe someone registered it in two different places ie one where he died and the other where he was living  :-\

Hi Rosie, yes I looked via the spectacles as suggested earlier in the thread.  It did cross my mind that his death had been registered in both places, but I wondered whether anyone would know if GRO would know they were one and the same, therefore only register one of the deaths.

In those days without methods of keeping these records like we have today I doubt they would have noticed.  The returns would have been processed and forwarded to the GRO from each district.

I agree it does look like the same person  ;D

So does anybody know why the Hunslet death wasn't registered at GRO?

Also I found another William Stones death at Hunslet Cemetery, on 28 July 1872 aged 38, whose death doesn't seem to have been registered at all.  I did widen my search to UK wide in case it was registered elsewhere.
