Albert Joseph Derrick, son of Harriet Williams
« on: Friday 25 January 19 17:25 GMT (UK) »
Born 1871, Amherst, Victoria. The subject of the attached 1904 South Australia Police gazette report, under the heading of "Apprehensions of The Week". Mentioned in the 1920 death notice of his mother as deceased. Brother of my great-grandmother.
I am trying to find when and where Albert J. Derrick may have died, and where he might be buried. The 1904 report is our last clue.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Who appears to be your fella. [Will have to be confirmed]

Geraldton Guardian (WA : 1906 - 1928)
Tue 22 Oct 1907
At the Police Court yesterday morning a man named Albert Joseph Derrick was charged on the information of Constable Sullivan with having used obscene language. Mr. E. Pope, J.P., was on the bench. Sergt. Goodridge applied for a remand until Thursday, on the ground that accused was acting in a very irrational manner. He had good reason to believe that Derrick had been in a lunatic asylum, and would like to have him medically examined. The remand was granted.

Escape from Asylum.
Police are watching for Albert Derrick(45), a patient who escaped from the Claremont Hospital for the Insane yesterday morning. Derrick is considered to be harmless, and he was on semi-parole at the time of his escape. He is 5ft. 8in. in height, with brown hair, turning grey, and sallow complexion. He was wearing the institution clothes— khaki coat and trousers and black boots, branded 'M5.'

Thanks, giblet, for these bits of information.
This Albert J. Derrick may well be ours. My only concern is that two of these references are post-1920, and in 1920, when his mother died, Albert Joseph was named as her son in the family death notice and was listed there as deceased. (Attached)
It is possible that the death notice has him to be presumed dead if he'd been in W.A. and out of contact with his family for many years.
I appreciate your efforts.

The death notice has a birthdate around 1871. The notice of the escape gives an age of 45 years which gives a DoB of 1883.

This Derrick record has a trip from Vic to WA.

Hi everyone,

I feel there may still be a chance its your fella in WA but cant find anything to confirm it.
Your article is dated 1904 and i cant find anything on him in SA or VIC after that date. The next "sighting" appears to be the article Sue posted dated 1907 and is the earliest i can find WA.

Could be worth contacting someone about the asylum records. The Fremantle Asylum apparently closed in 1909 and the new one was the Claremont Asylum. Not sure what information would be available as there is usually a 100 year seal. I was just thinking that maybe if the information is available it might help confirm or eliminate this fella in WA.
