Johnsons in Swansea - completed
« on: Saturday 13 August 05 17:20 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for some info on early Johnsons in Swansea. I have been to the Archive centre and have gathered much information but still some pieces elude me.

In the tree i have a John M A Johnson born 24/09/1842, baptised in Saint Mary's church Swansea 06/11/1842. His parents were George Johnson (1806 from Swansea) and Jane Thomas (1809 from Quaker's Yard, Glamorgan) - they married 22/3/1836 in Saint Mary's church Swansea. I have noted that on no census returns or even in his baptism did he have the middle initials used, this information came from a family bible.

I have John M A Johnson on the 1851 census with his parents and brothers and sisters. I have him on on the 1881 and 1891 census returns married to Mary Ann Forsdike and they have children. The problem is i can't find him at all whichever way i search on the 1861 and 1871 census returns. He was not with his parents, they were living in Trog Street, Swansea and Rutland Street, Swansea in those two returns. His was not married until 03/09/1877 and i have his wife in 1861/1871 unmarried and living in Llanelli. Can anyone help in finding him in 1861/71?

Hi David

Could you please post the info you have from 1881 or 1891?

I can only find the hotelier of the Adelphi and he has children that would have been born before your John's marriage to Mary Ann.  Was she previously married to a Mr Donald?  Can't find any FORSDIKE in Llanelli!?

Sorry if I am being dense!  ::)

Suppose i should have metionned Mary Ann first marriage to a Donald hence she is on 1871 census as a Donald and 1861 as a Forsdike.

It is the correct one you have for 1881, they were the owner's of the Adelphi hotel and they are there again in 1891. Some of the Donald children are there with them in 1881 and yes i believe that Albert was born 1875 before they were married in 1877, either that or he is a Donald but i can't find a baptism to prove either way.

There seems to be a marriage for Mary Ann to DONALD in Truro - would that be right?

I can find no trace of JJ in England or Wales - very strange!

I wonder where he went to learn to be a hotelier?

If the children had been his, I would have said he must be in Carmarthen in 1871.

Where did the marraige take place, do you know?

I seem to be asking more questions than I am answering - sorry!

;)

Yes i had guessed the marriage as that one William John Donald to Mary Ann Forsdike in dec qtr of 1867 in Truro.

The marriage between John and Mary in 1877 took place in Llanelli (presumably as i am lead to believe it usually took place in the bride's parish) she was born in in Lanelli on 17/2/1849.

Gonna leave this one for now, much searching hasn't made any inroads on searching for him on the missing census returns

Many thanks
