Decipher name on 1901 census
« on: Sunday 27 January 19 23:52 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone decipher this odd surname on the 1901 census for Stocksbridge, WRY?
Blanche ??? was 9 years old, born Barnsley c1892.
I've checked the Barnsley births for around this time for a Blanche, not nothing matches.  Also the 1911 census.
FindMyPast transcribes it as Haullugler, and I can't do much better

Looks like a very reasonable find.  Think the loop on the 'D' might be confusing the 'ea' of the surname above.

The writer doesn't seem to bother 'crossing his 't's', (see 'visilor' - ie visitor, in the next column) - so any of those upstokes in Blanche's name could be an 'l' or a 't'.

i've checked her out.
She is in 1911 with a sister INA and Ina is with the family in 1901, but Blanch is not. So I think it's reasonable to assume this is she.

also regarding handwriting - look at the open 'a' in Boarder  fits with what looks like a U in Heatherglen

In case it helps, from the birth that Mckha489 posted, the GRO gives her mother's maiden name as Day, which is the surname listed below her on that census snippet posted.

Her marriage spells the surname with an a, as in Heatherglen, and her father was a collier, William Heatherglen.
