Children in prison project
« on: Tuesday 29 January 19 07:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi I知 looking for a little point in the right direction.

I知 work in a school and I知 creating a project of children in prisons roughly between 1800-1910 in the UK to show different punishment and conditions.

I知 especially looking for arrest/prison records that contain pictures of the children. I知 aware this didn稚 happen till the mid-late period I知 looking at and that not everywhere did this.

Thanks
Helen

Does anyone know of collections I should be looking at ? Establishments or areas that did this? Would save me a lot of time searching in the dark.

Also feel fre to mention any interesting or unusual crimes/ sentences you have come across.

Have you googled your topic? I am not sure what you mean about searching in the dark. There are several references to the subject and you will still have to search and refine.

Yes I have googled them spent about 2 days looking. seem to come up with a lot of the same pictures and crimes are much the same.

Looking for a bit of variety of about 2 dozen examples. So just asking Incase  someone has come across one I haven稚.

Also know Bedford prison took photographs.

Thanks

Hello tink.tech

You may be interested to read about one of my ancestors who was jailed in 1876 at the age of 9. It's  in the Victorian Crime & Punishment series  http://vcp.e2bn.org/prisoners/2043-1811-dennis-fairey.html
He was sentenced to 21 days hard labour and 4 years reform school.  There's a photo of him, too.

There have been articles in various family history magazines. They usually list sources. Sorry, no time to check.
