Harrison Family, Wolverton
« on: Wednesday 30 January 19 13:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I wonder if anyone can help...have just started delving into this area and I am looking at James Harrison who married Hannah Eden.

James was born 1843 and died 1878 in the Warwick Lunatic Asylum. He was buried at Wolverton.
Hannah was born 1849 in Hook Norton, she married James at Wolverton 30th October 1866.

They had children, all born Wolverton.

Charles Henry Harrison (1867-1932)
Ellen (1869 - ?)
Louisa Harrison (1872-1942)
Charlotte Harrison (1877-1879)
William Harrison (1877-1878)

William died April 1878 and James was admitted to the Lunatic Asylum a few weeks later in May. He died in the June, only in his thirties.

A quick search shows me that in 1881 Charles and Ellen were in the Stratford-upon-Avon workhouse while Louisa was boarding as a 'Scholar' with an older couple - I can find no relation to this.

I cannot find anything further on Hannah, no death, nowhere on the census but this feels like a very tragic story. Any ideas or avenues I can look?

Thank you

(I'm not new here by the way, I have been on here for years, but can't get back into my account  ::))

You don’t say whether you have looked for a re-marriage for Hannah given she was under 30 when James died

To help for anybody searching - Hook Norton is Oxfordshire not Warwickshire

Hi,

Sorry, yes I have started looking but haven't turned anything up yet. I guess because her children were all sent to different places, I have kind of assumed something happened to her.

Edited to add - just found her, remarrying in 1887! No idea where she is on 1881 census though.

I saw the 1891 entry for William & Hannah and did wonder about the 1887 marriage

She's not with William in 1881 though

1881 entry for a female indexed as H A b Hook Norton 1850 but if you look at image it's H H

Sadly - she's in the Warwickshire lunatic asylum but it's too much of a coincidence for it not to be her

Thank you for finding that. That means James and Hannah both ended up in there. Kind of interesting as I have a long family history there, my parents and grandparents both worked there from the 1960s until it closed in 1990s and I actually live on the site. I will dig around and see if I can find any details of why they were there.

Just found the record on the UK Lunacy Patients Admission Registers and she was admitted 15 May 1878, James was admitted 7 May 1878. Their son died 26 April 1878 and James was buried 29 June 1878, so a lot of tragedy in a short time. I think I will order the death certificates to see if I can find out more.
