James and Margaret McClay
« on: Wednesday 30 January 19 21:33 GMT (UK) »
Hello!

Looking for any/all information and descendants on James ( born Ireland around 1811) and Margaret (born 1814 Ireland). Had 6 children, Jane, Mary, William,John, Margaret, Samuel. Moved to Scotland Paisley Low Church, Renfrewshire, living at 5 Espeduir St in 1861. Margaret , her daughter Margaret and Samuel came to USA between 1868-87 settling in Argyle NY. I assume James died there, and the other children remained in Scotland or moved back to Ireland. Would be great fun to find cousins and find answers!  Thank you for your time/Nancy

On the 1910 US census Samuel says he went to the US in 1869, his wife Mary in 1867 and his mother in 1872. How good their memories are?

Thank you do we know where /what became of James. I’m assuming his wife Left after his death to be with son and daughter here in US. Their daughter Mary died young 2  came to US so 3 remained and I should like to follow up and find descendants of William(1850) Sara (1842) and John (1845). Most of all burial place of James whether it be Scotland or Ireland.
Thank youUVT

Have you looked to see if anyone is researching the same family on here - in Surname Interests, under Your Tools, below?

Have you looked to see if they are in family trees on Ancestry, rootsweb, etc.

Have you tried to find the family left behind in 1871, 1881, 1891 censuses, etc, (and what are their years of birth)?

And Welcome to rootschat!

Just putting their ages in 1861, all from Ireland
James Mcclay   50
Margaret Mcclay   44
Margaret Mcclay   24
Mary Mcclay   19
John Mcclay   16
William Mcclay   11
Jane Mcclay   7

Have you looked for deaths on scotlandspeople?

Their daughter Mary died young 2  came to US so 3 remained

Are you sure about Mary dying young?

In the 1900 US census for Argyle, New York there is:

Head: Mary Rouse, widow, born Ireland, age 58, dob Jun 1841
Son: Samuel Rouse, born New York, age 24, dob Jan 1876
Mother: Margaret McClay, born Ireland, age 82, dob Aug 1817

Edit:  Samuel Rouse's baptism record at St Andrew's, Argyle, New York give his middle name as McClay.   This is the same church where the burial records for Samuel McClay and wife Mary McClay are.
