Brown family - Lambeth
« on: Thursday 31 January 19 17:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi I'm trying to find out more about my 5 x great grandparents, John Brown and Kezia East.  I have found the baptism records for 5 of their children in Clapham and Lambeth but I can't find a marriage cert for John and Kezia.  I think they would have married around 1808.  I am wondering if they were Romany because I know there were many Romany families the Lambeth area at this time and that both Kezia and Brown are names found in the Romany community.  Can anybody help please?

Welcome to rootschat

Where did you find that Kezia's surname was East.

Could you please list the children that you have found and when/where they were baptised

Hi Rosie
I found out Kezia's maiden name was East on the baptism record of her first daughter Ruth.
The children are:
Ruth baptised Jan 29th 1809 in the Parish of Clapham
Mary Anne (my 4 x great grandmother) baptised 1814 at the age of 3 in the Wesleyan Church, China Terrace, Lambeth
The other siblings Elizabeth, Richard and John were also baptised at China Terrace.  Elizabeth went on to marry a James Young who was a horse hair curler.

I think there is a good possiblilty that your family are romany with the surnames Brown, East and Young. The location is good to.

I would follow up all the children to see who they married and if there are any more romany surnames and look at all their 'trades' on the census.

I've done some more digging and have found that John Brown's mother was Mary Ann Lovell.

Where did you get that information.

Have you got John & Kezia on census.

What occupation is noted for John on his childrens baptisms
