« on: Sunday 03 February 19 11:38 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I hope someone can help. Attached is occupations for some relatives who emigrated to Indiana and worked in the Tin Mills. I can work out all except the first in the list. Any ideas? Thanks

As there's a rollerman listed I'd imagine this was much like a steel strip mill and that the catcher's job was to literally catch the heated strip as it came out of the rolling mill and feed it back in to the rollers of the next size down. I'd imagined tin mills did only the plating on already rolled steel but this suggest the steel plate was made onsite before being tinned.

Thanks again. Very dangerous work!

As a follow on from this I wonder if anyone can help fill in gaps in my research. This all relates to the Charles family. I can document them in the UK census up till 1881, can't find them in 1891 but then they emigrate in 1897 to the U.S.

Therefore first query is can anyone find them in 1891 in UK (or elsewhere)?

in 1881 they were living at 9 High Street Llanelly

Owen Charles (age 30)
MaryAnn Charles (nee Evans) (age 31)
David John Charles (age 7)
Susanna(h) Charles (age 6)
Willie (William) Charles (age 3)
Owen T (Thomas) Charles (age 9 weeks)

There is also a later son Frederick Charles (born 1883)

I  think Owen dies 1886 and David John and Susannah die 1885

The next time I can find them is when Mary Ann, William, Owen T and Frederick emigrate to the U.S. in 1897 (see attached).

In 1900 they are living in Indiana, the sons working in the Tin Works

And it looks like William dies 1909

Can't find Mary Ann, Owen Thomas or Frederick after 1900

Regards

Roy

Thanks very much, don’t know why I couldnt spot it.

Or a more general note, has anyone come across any articles of how carmarthenshire emigrants made their way up to Liverpool and how they were “recruited” I first place, as I am presuming they didn’t just go to Liverpool on the off chance and that their passage may have been paid by prospective employers?
