First name wife of G Greenfield
« on: Monday 04 February 19 10:51 GMT (UK) »
1901 census number 208 on attached .
G Greenfield is most probably my grandfather George, on Free BMD births 1870-1875 all male G Greenfields are George. I have tracked down on 1901 all likely others in south of England and London. He was born in Pulborough in 1872 although this entry shows St Pancras.
My grandfather 'married' my grandmother Emma in 1910-1911-that census shows 'less than a year married'. My father born December 1911.George had changed his name to William Matthews at some point after 1903 when he was in workhouse as George Greenfield. ( living at same address on this census is a 'C Matthews' maybe George chose this surname for some reason. ) I have his death certificate 1947 showing both names. I cannot trace a marriage for my grandparents, either unable to marry as no documents with new name or already married with Greenfield name.
I have accounted for all Selina born in Bedfordshire 1869-1873, no Serena born in Beds that period. No Irene or Irena births in Beds that period. The initial letter does look like the 'S' written by enumerator in column to denote 'Single'.
Any ideas greatly appreciated to see if I can trace a marriage to G Greenfield

Hi,

Do we have a capital "L" anywhere for comparison? I was wondering about "Luna"...

Best regards,
Karen

Added: I don't think it's an "S". When you look at "Son", the "S" - although differing from entry to entry - is not really like the first letter of the lady's name.

My first thought was Irene or Irena.

Or could it be a T like Teresa  :-\

Thanks, Rosie!

OK, not quite the same.

As Millipede says: It could indeed be Irena - the "re" is similar to in "Alfred" lower down.

Maybe she wasn't from there (or even England...!).

There is a Thirza born in the right district for Sutton Beds Mar 1870

Thirza Matilda Humberstone

I have a Thirza and the name gets mangled quite a bit.

One Theresa Brown born Beds.

I've just seen the S for Single  and it looks like that so it might be Selina/Serena with the e not registering  :-\
