Durham Record Office - Tanfield & Medomsley PRs
« on: Monday 04 February 19 16:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am seeking clarification of 2 records seen on joiner marriage index:-

1) Tanfield 15/5/1736 Wm Blackburn to Katherine Surtice

2) Medomsley 15/5/1737 William Blakeburn to Catherine Surtis

Either of the above could be right (or maybe they are one and the same!!)

- William could have been baptised at Ryton 20/4/1707 (Dad Luke)
- Katherine could have been baptised Medomsley 28/2/1716 Dad Robert)

As far as I know they had no daughters, possibly 5 sons - maybe this explains the long gap between children

Robert baptised Tanfield                         2/4/1738    no Mum given
Luke       "         Ryton                          14/8/1743     "       "
John       "         All Saints, Lanchester   22/4/1747  Mum Katherine
Thomas   "        All Saints, Lanchester   22/7/1750      "        "
Surtis      "        All Saints, Lanchester   13/7/1754       "  Catherine

Any assistance re this conundrum would be appreciated
Judith

No news yet on when the Record Office will be re-opening and nothing yet to even say if the staff are still working from home or have returned to do their usual duties but not yet open to the public.

I looked on Durham Records online, again just transcriptions, but both records are there and both say 15th May 1737, and the one in Tanfield says 'Katherine' was of Medomsley.

It 'may' be that the transcription you have has the wrong year for one of them and one is indeed a banns record (or an entry saying a parishioner married in a different parish)

Durham Record Office catalogue shows they only hold actual banns registers for both of these parishes from 1754 onwards :-(

When the archives do open, if no-one is able to look it up for you, then an option is to use their 'quick search' service. Order online (£5 per record) and get the image delivered by email.

I think you may well be correct in thinking both records are for the same people, but I can't offer to look it up at Durham as I am nowhere near the area.

If you get to the bottom of it do post back. I like to know how things turn out (I'm nosey!)

Boo

I have St. Thomas Collierley Marriages with me as I type. 1842-1929. For those who do not know the area it is between Annfield Plain and Dipton.
