1841 census look-up, please
« on: Saturday 13 August 05 23:26 BST (UK) »
Well, turns out my great-grandmother was NOT Charlotte Noble, but Charlotte Herne ... I think.  The "r" is questionable, but what else could it be?

Could someone look up the 1841 census for "Herne" in Westerham?

Any ideas where I might look for a Charlotte Herne, born Westerham, in 1835-6?

Thanks again for any assistance you may be able to provide.

 Hi,

could this be your Charlotte?

1841 Census
HO107/485/14/26
Town
Joseph Hearne, 45, Post master, yes
Lucy Hearne, 45, yes
Mary Hearne, 15, yes,
William Hearne, 15, yes
? Hearne, 11, yes - i can't read the entry very well. not sure if the name is Sarah or Harriet but it is a female - suspect its actually Harriet.
Charlotte Hearne, 7, yes
Thomas Hearne, 5, yes

I've had a quick look at the 1861 and 1871 censuses. Joseph and Lucy are still living in Westerham but with no Charlotte.

Regards

Paula

Hi again,

I've found this Charlotte's baptism entry in the IGI along with several other children.

Paula:

Thanks so much!  My only concern at this point is that it's Herne on the birth record and Hearne in your census.  What do you think?

It's never easy....

They both sound exactly the same to me ;D

Her marriage should verify her father's name & occupation.

Hi,
I think the missing name from the 1841 entry posted by paula looks like Hannah, I'm pretty sure it ends in 'ah'.

Thanks, folks; couldn't do this without you.

Am still wondering about the different spellings ... were people asked to spell their names or did the census taker just write down what he or she thought it was?

That she wasn't with the family in '61 would be a good indicator she'd married by then.  I know the Luffs were in Feltham in '71.

Thanks again.

Forms were usually left with the occupants and these forms were transcribed into the enumerator's books which is what we see:

http://www.gendocs.demon.co.uk/census.html

So there is room for error there if we assume that the family were literate with the father being a postmaster.  Perhaps it is HEARNE that was used by the family and your later HERNE is the error?  If your later HERNE is from (guessing) a birth certificate then that would be spoken orally to the registrar and he would have written it down how it sounded.  In any case, hopefully you will find Charlotte's marriage and that should go some way to confirming her origins.

It's pretty rare to research a family without finding a variety of spellings at some point in time ;)

Best wishes

Yes, the "Herne" is from my grandmother's birth certificate.  I'm now wondering if I should order the same for one of the other children to see how Charlotte's last name is spelled.

Any other suggestions?
