Life in Kilsyth 1850 -1910
« on: Friday 08 February 19 20:28 GMT (UK) »
I'm researching my grandmother's family (Wilson) who lived in Kilsyth in the late 19th century. Where might I find online  information about life in Kilsyth at that time?

A bit on the early side, maybe, but the New Statistical Account was written in 1845.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

There is an excellent book entitled "Weavers, Miners, and The Open Book" by James Hutchison.
ISBN 0 9511362 0 8

It will tell you everything there is to know about the town.  There is also a whole series of books called "Times Past - Kilsyth" by Wm. D. Chalmers.  They have an excellent collection of photographs.  My father was on the Board of Directors of Walter Alexander & Sons Ltd. and supervised the building and staffing of the first bus garage there in 1924.   If you have any other questions, please send me a P.M. I will be happy to assist.

The books that I have by Mr William Chalmers are called "Faces and Places" of Kilsyth. They contain a series of pictures taken around the Kilsyth area from years gone by.
My Dad has several of them and he was a good friend of Mr Chalmers before my Dad passed away.
