Marrianne Thielmann 1925- 2004
« on: Wednesday 13 February 19 17:49 GMT (UK) »
Marrianne was born in Germany, Westphalia 31 August 1925 and died in Devon 2004.

She married a Kenneth Robert Gibson in 1949 shortly after the war.  He was in the Royal Airforce stationed in what was then West Germany.
I have the details of their family after that but nothing of her parents.  I believe her father was Leo Thielmann and her mother Kacerane Voss but can find no proof at all, not even their birth/death records.

Any help most appreciated.

Richard

Hi Richard,

Are you able to narrow down Westphalia a little? That covers a big area.

Also, I'm wondering a little about some of the spellings. Marrianne is usually written with one "r", and I'm not familiar with "Kacerane"; Katharina/Kathrin would be more likely.

Do you have any other info at all?

Thanks,
Karen

Hi Karen,

Thanks for your response.

The spelling of her name has been given with one "r" and two by her immediate family. As for where she was born I am not exactly sure. Her marriage took place at Wahn, Köln, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany and I would imagine the location might have been near her family.

Her mothers name is phonetic spelling I'm afraid.  Like you I have never seen the name before, during my direct family searches in Germany, under the name Schoch.  So Katherina looks like a good way to go.

Thanks
Richard

Hello, Richard,

I have to agree with Karen: Westphalen is quite large, and finding a Marianne Thielmann there would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. In addition, there are very strict blocking periods for civil  registries in Germany:
- Birth register: 110 years
- Marriage register: 80 years
- Death register: 30 years
The use  before the expiry of these periods  is granted only to the spouses, ancestors and descendants of the person affected by the document.

Since the marriage date / year and the place are known, I would advise you to contact the relevant registry office. Today, Wahl is part of the city Köln.  Unfortunately, I did not find an e-mail address for the registry office on the Cologne website. It is probably only possible to contact by telephone or via an online form. The website is also available in English. Possibly, the registry office may require proof that you are a descendant of the marianne.

I hope I could help you a little.

Kind regards from Germany
Brigitte

Thank you Brigette,

I will try online as I now live the other side of the Atlantic now, so a visit is not possible.  It is strange that I can find no other family trees listing her, or in fact anyone researching her family at all.  I have found records in Germany for all my other relatives under Schoch/Österlein, for births/marriages and deaths, but not Thielmann.

Regards
Richard

All right. If you need help, contact me and send me a private message, if this is possible in this forum. Further tip. Get copies of the "Sammelmappe" as well. The "Sammelmappe" can be a real treasure chest, because it contains all applications and certificates, which are necessary for the wedding.

Good luck!

The registry office Köln Wahn was incorporated into Köln Porz in 1929 and later merged into Köln City. see attachment.

Here´s the link to the document service of Köln City.
if you scroll down the page to
"Aufgaben" you´ll see Ahnenforschung (Family research) so this should be the right place to apply.

urkundenservice@stadt-koeln.de

I would also contact the West German Society for Family research district of Köln.
English should be no Problem.
