Nicholas Potts, Castleside about 1843
« on: Sunday 17 February 19 18:02 GMT (UK) »
Looking for any information on Nicholas Potts who was mentioned in a newspaper article  as a publican at Castleside near Shotley Bridge in 1843.  He would have been born around 1816.

Hello keyboard86

I think the second one is my man.  If he was 35 in the 1851 Census, he would have been born about 1816 and that is more or less spot on with information I already had.  The intriguing thing is that he married a Davison and that is the name of the family who ran The Lane Ends Inn (later known as The Horse and Groom) for about 200 years until 1939.  So I really believe that you are absolutely right with this one!  Before you mentioned that, I had thought him likely to be a lead miner as well as a publican and that would have pointed to the Smelters Arms which was around at the time - landlord unknown!

Thanks again

Interesting burial place for someone who lived and worked in Castleside - it may have some connection with his family rather than the local church yard.

Hi If you are only looking at the pub side of Nicholas, you may not require the apparent birth Dec qtr 1852 Durham of a Mark Potts mmn Davison, in 1861/71 he is with a Hall family, 1861 as a Friend.

I am trying to trace the families of the men who ran both pubs in Castleside but Mark would only be 9 in 1861 so not working but if he was still there in 1871 he was either living away or it was just co-incidence that he was there on both census nights.  It does seem a bit odd that the child was separated from his parents who would be quite affluent and could quite easily afford to keep him.
