HI the marriage of Robert Davison was either 20th or 21st 1870 Castleside, the Familysearch result states Elizabeth was a Widow and was of Backstone Bank, Iroolsingham ( Assume Woolsingham )
By Licence both 21 or upwards.
So how can mmn be same as married name, unless a Nicholson married a Nicholson
EDIT Robert of Four Lane Ends occ Brewer.

I wish I had more experience of this to help me understand because it is so confusing.  The 1891 Census shows (for the Horse and Groom) Elizabeth Davison (widow) as head of the household and Annie Nicholson (single) as her daughter and Charles William Almond was a visitor on Census night as were two children both named Nicholson.  How could Elizabeth Davison's unmarried daughter be named Nicholson?

Ann Nicholson married Charles William Almond at Tynemouth in the 4th Quarter of 1898 and their son Edward Nicholson Almond was baptised on 9th March 1899.  It was this Ann Almond who was described as the last in the family line and she inherited all the property.  I have no idea what became of her children but she was about 74 when she sold up the business

:) As I said earlier someone is not purchasing Birth/Marriage or Death certificates but is relying on census returns?

I still do not understand how Elizabeth Davison's unmarried daughter could be named Nicholson unless she was adopted and that was her real name or she was illegitimate and the father acknowledged her as his child

Just as a footnote on the possible fate of her son.  There was an Edward Almond who was a publican in nearby Leadgate.  Perhaps she had set him up out of the proceeds of the sale of her pubs.  I know this is not really relevant.

Yes, the first two children you have listed have the same names and ages.

Going back to Annie Nicholson, she was probably illegitimate as she was born in 1865.  Her mother, Elizabeth Nicholson, did not marry Robert Davison until 1870.  I assume he did not acknowledge her as his daughter or he would have changed her name.

Hi I live in Castleside consett and this thread relates to the Horse and Groom pub at the four lane ends as it was first known-it appears it was a pub from about 1710 and also blacksmiths-I am researching the pub rather than the family
