1861 census Christiana Hills nee Hicks
« on: Wednesday 20 February 19 09:15 GMT (UK) »
Looking for Christiana Hills married to Thomas Hills on 1861 census.

Christiana born 30 Aug 1838 Havering atte Bower to George and Susan Hicks.
Thomas born c1838 Barkingside.

Christiana had an illegitimate daughter in Nov 1856, Emma Alice Stapleton Hicks. She is living with her grandparents George and Susan but down as their daughter and called Alice. Definitely Emma Alice, as dates all tally and no baptisms for an Alice to George and Susan.

Thomas and Christiana married 18 Sep 1859 in Barkingside.

Daughter Annie Elizabeth born 28 Feb 1860 in Barkingside. Can’t find her either on 1861 but couldn’t find a death in Barkingside either.

Alice and Annie both living with Christiana and Thomas in Barkingside 1871.

Frustrating ... they can’t just have disappeared.
I also only have 11/12 of the children she says she’s had on 1911 census. Can anyone spot the other one?
She says that 8/12 have died by 1911 but I’ve only found 6 deaths so far.

I have Emma Alice Stapleton hicks (later called Alice hills) 12/11/1856 (dies as Mrs William Allen Willis in 1932)
Annie Elizabeth hills 28/2/1860
William Hills 29/3/1862 - 3/4/1862
George Henry Hills 26/12/1863
William Thomas Hills 9/3/1867 - 16/7/1868
Emily Frances Hills 16/7/1868 - 8/8/1869
Martha Maria Hills 19/7/1870 (marries Herbert Goater and dies 1902)
Edward Henry Hills 3/2/1872 - 1874 (not found burial. Registration is West Ham 1874 Q4 vol 4a page 48)
Elizabeth Ann Hills 18/8/1873 (can’t find her after 1891 census)
Thomas Henry Hills 21/6/1878 - 13/8/1882
William Hills 1888 (found on census but not on parish records).

So any help on missing child and deaths would be great.

Could be George and Mary Lucy’s I suppose, as through the generations they have a habit of calling the grandchildren sons and daughters.

However, if true, that’s two of Thomas and Christiana’s children I need to find now 😱

William Hills said he was 17 yrs 10mo old ( & born Barkingside) when he joined the Essex Militia in July 1904.

His height is recorded as 6ft 6 3/4 in - if that's right he would have been very lean indeed at 127lb.

Next of kin:

Father, Herbert Hills
Younger brothers, Herbert & Alfred.

Address of the above: 3 Britannia Cottages, Barkingside, Essex.

I wonder whether this is the right William?
