Quick Question
« on: Wednesday 20 February 19 22:22 GMT (UK) »
On of my relatives, James William Kelly born 1872 in Oldham, served as a Private in the Manchester Reg, 10th Battalion. On 21.04.1916 he was discharged with the following detail;

'Action: Discharged Para 392 (xvi)'

Can anyone please tell me the reason for his discharge, was he injured?

Many thanks, Luke

Paragraph 392 of King's Regulations 1912 (xvi) is:

No longer physically fit for war service.

Thank you tonepad, his military record states the following (which I've only just taken in),

Military History
Country: Home    From: 04.9.14       To: 09.09.14    Duration: 6 Days
Country: Egypt    From: 10.9.14       To: 16.07.15    Duration: 310 Days
Country: Home    From: 17.07.15     To: 21.04.16    Duration: 280 Days
Total Duration: 1 Year, 231 Days

So he was either injured and stayed in the army for 280 days after being shipped back (which seems unlikely) or he left for a non-warfare related reason (I think).

There were causes other than injury which led to a soldier being considered no longer physically fit.

You perhaps haven't looked at all his records - he was invalided out with chronic rheumatism attributed to his service and a persistent cough.  There is a comprehensive set of medical notes of later date following up his medical condition.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

My uncle served in Egypt. Your James Kelly was old enough to have been his father.
